It just became this cycle where we injected more and more interactivity into everything. “This meant we had more of an budget, so we leaned heavily into that. Expose all shadows.' The Combine Ordinal, also known as the Combine Captain 1 and Combine Officer, is a high-ranking transhuman officer class of the Combine Overwatch introduced in Half-Life: Alyx. “One thing we noticed early on with Alyx, even back when we had nothing but Half-Life 2 textures on our prototype walls, players were exploring the world much more than they ever had in the past,” Walker explains. You can reach out and touch anything within the rendered world, so Valve played with this idea to ensure Alyx remained immersive at every possible turn. In your game you can try to get your player to do whatever it is you want them to do, but if they’re not interested or more interested in something else, you’re just gonna fight them on that.”Įngaging with environments in virtual reality is fundamentally different to traditional games. “One of the pieces of terminology we have at the design level is the budget of a player’s attention. Thanks to everyone who posted above. After talking with Walker about the creation of Half-Life: Alyx and his excitement of returning to the saddle, I asked if this was an experience that could only be conceived in VR. Obviously, I am not saying it will 100% fix your problem as you probably have a different headset and video card but in my case the steps above definitely solved the issue. I replaced it with a new NVIDIA RTX 3090. As mentioned before, the only thing that changed was my video card. This problem is very weird as the game always worked fine before when I played through in 8K using my NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super. So basically none of the above solved the issue.ġ) Used my Pimax 8K X config tool ("PiTool") to change the headset mode from "Native" 8K (3840 x 2160 per eye) to "Upscaling" (2560 x 1440 per eye).Ģ) Started Half-Life Alyx and now I was able to get to the main menu as normal.ģ) Went into "Performance" then clicked the cog wheel icon to show advanced settings and changed the render mode to "Vulcan" (it was set to "DX11").ĥ) Used my Pimax 8K X config tool ("PiTool") to change the headset mode back to "Native" 8K (3840 x 2160 per eye).Ħ) Started Half-Life Alyx and it worked normally in 8K with 180 degree FOV.ħ) Checked the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life Alyx\game\hlvr\cfg\boot.vcfg" file and the "DefaultRenderSystemOption" setting was now "-vulcan" (it had not changed back to "-DX11" which did not work).
